Sharma, who was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2001 said, "if there was a musician in every family there would not have been partition of India."

World famous santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma has said music must be compulsorily taught in Indian schools as it would go a long way in unifying people.

"There must be compulsory training of music in schools," Pandit Sharma said while talking to reporters at the Nehru Centre here last night where a documentary was screened on him.

Sharma, who was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2001 said, "if there was a musician in every family there would not have been partition of India."

Besides classical music Sharma also forayed in the Hindi film music genre and composed music for several hit Bollywood movies including, Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje, Faasle, Chandni, Lamhe and Darr.

Describing Indian music as melodious, he noted that "musicians are not created, they are born. They come from the past experience of life."

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, flute maestro with whom Sharma composed the film music was also present on the occasion. Others present were painter Anjali Ila Menon and Baroness Shreila Flather.

The 71-year-old music veteran, who came here from New York, was also a vocalist for some years and is credited with single-handedly making the santoor a popular classical instrument.

Sharma, who recorded his first solo album in 1960, teamed up with Pandit Chaurasia and Pandit Brijbhushan Kabra to produce the thematic album, 'The Call of the Valley' which turned out to be one of the greatest hits in Indian classical music.

He is also recipient of many national and international awards including honorary citizenship of the city of Baltimore, USA, Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan.
