(PTI): Indian fusion music stands good chance on the global stage but its prospects are hampered due to a dearth of proper backing, according to internationally acclaimed musician, Remo Fernandes.

"Pure Indian music could not get into international mainstream for obvious reasons. Fusion music stands a good chance, but one would require excellent backing in the form of agents, managers and record companies. Sadly, this kind of backing is badly lacking in India," Remo told PTI in an e-mail reply.

The singer, who performed at the inaugural and closing days of 'Incredible India @ 60' in New York, said such a backing is mandatory for the Indian fusion music to make waves worldwide.

A versatile singer, known for his contributions to Hindi cinema and also fusion music, Remo did not miss the opportunity in the US to sing a few of his choicest songs.

"There is a very special sensation when you are representing your country abroad. It brings about a sense of nationalistic pride and a deep feeling of responsibility. An artist's performance and behaviour can subtly influence a foreign audiences' impression of his country," the singer said on his experience of performing for the country abroad.

He described as "exhilarating" the experience of playing with full band for the first time in the US.

"It was particularly exciting to see and hear audiences' reactions and standing ovations and encores were the last thing we expected," he said.

Remo said he was not looking for any contracts during his current trip as he just wanted to travel around after a hard day's work.
