Born on September 8, 1933 in Satara town in western Maharashtra as Asha Mangeshkar, she and her sisters have formed one of the most formidable singing families in the country, virtually dominating the Indian music scene for the past five decades. Join us at 11PM EST as we play some of her best soundtracks.

Women at her age would rather call it quit and chill out, but not Asha. And arent we glad! At 74, she is going strong with numerous collaborations,  Grammy nomination, and a brand new album, Asha Reveals The Real RD in 2006. The buck has not stoped with foreign collaborations only.  All Bhojpuri lovers would be glad to hear some soundtracks from Asha in upcoming Nehiya Sanehiya.

Having worked with Brett Lee to Kronos Quartet, Asha is on lookout for her yet another dream project with another legend, Carlos Santana. “I have spoken to him about my idea,” she says. “I want to sing in Hindi and have him play in his Spanish style.” "We should keep looking for new sounds and get away from typical", she asserts.

She is not too thrilled about remixes, especially the ones with no credit to the original artists. “Nowadays, whenever a cover version or remixed song comes on TV, everything but the original singer’s name is mentioned. It’s not fair,” she says.

As far as message to the new generation is concerned,  she further echoes, “I want to cut an album that inspires the youth to take up classical music.” We know you will do it Asha and pray for many more years of such music from you.

Happy Birthday Asha!
