Kotla Sultan Singh (Amritsar), Aug.1: About three decades after his death, playback singer Mohammad Rafi still rules the hearts of millions, especially in his native place of Kotla Sultan Singh, 35 kilometres from Amritsar.
So deep is the regard for him, that Rafi's friends and fans now want a music academy to be built in his name. |

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has been jailed for six years for buying weapons from bombers who attacked the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) in 1993. The star's lawyers argued he should remain free on bail for good behaviour, but the judge ruled against leniency. Dutt, 48, is the most high-profile of 100 people who have been convicted over the blasts which killed 257 people. |

On a rainy weekend in August 1968, 32 internationally renowned musicians got together to hold one of the biggest events of the hippie movement of the time. Over 500,000 "flower children" (as they were known) celebrated the festival of rock in its various alternate avatars such as folk, blues, jazz, latin and rap. Attempts have been made several times since then to recreate Woodstock, but the original concert remains unique and legendary. |
