MUMBAI, India -- Before A.R. Rahman received three Academy Award nominations for his contributions to "Slumdog Millionaire's" Indian-infused techno soundtrack, he was known across India as "the Mozart of Madras." He's long been Bollywood's best-known composer, a household name for his love ballads, offbeat world rhythms and patriotic pop hits that have sold more than 100 million albums, making him one of the world's top-selling artists. Across India, many fans celebrated his nominations (one for Best Original Score and two for Best Song), and newspaper headlines chanted, "Ra. Ra. Rahman." But most fans say "Slumdog's" score was far from his best work. He's much better known for his often emotional ballads in Bollywood megahits such as "Roja" and "Lagaan," and hailed by critics for brooding songs for art house films. |

New Delhi, Feb 18 (PTI) The VVIP ICU at AIIMS is now reverberating with old Hindi film music with former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is recuperating here, requesting for the songs to be played on the radio. After the veteran leader expressed his desire to listen to some soothing music, attending doctors gave the nod saying it would have a calm effect. Vajpayee, known for his penchant for movies, old film music and poetry, has been listening to these songs on the AIR FM Gold radio station, his personal physician Dr Randeep Guleria said. |

Mumbai (IANS): He has been in the international music circuit for quite a while, but it is only with his Golden Globe award for his score in "Slumdog Millionaire" that Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman was catapulted into the big league in the West. He has since been hounded for solo photo ops - for the first time in his life.
"In that one week, I received three awards in the US. The first was the Critics' Awards. When I got that the American media wasn't interested in me. They didn't want my solo photographs. 'Can you please stand next to Danny Boyle?' they'd say. I think it was a glamour thing. By the time I came to the third award, the Golden Globe, they said, 'Can we have your solo pics, please?'," Rahman told IANS in an interview.
The composer is India's hope at the Oscars with three nominations - he has been nominated for Best Original Score and two for the Best Original Song for a motion picture with his songs "Jai Ho" and "O Saaya" in "Slumdog Millionaire".

Mumbai: DNA, in association with Rotary Club of Hiranandani Estate, Thane, brings on stage the legendary ghazal maestro to recreate the magic of the music form. On the eve of Jagjit Singh Live in Concert (at the Shanmukhananda Auditorium), the veteran exponent of ghazals rues the end of their era in Hindi films.
Jagjit is not singing any film songs currently because he feels there is a lack of taste on the part of today's filmmakers and music directors. "They don't know what ghazals are all about and they lack good taste in music. What does AR Rahman know about ghazals? He will never use a ghazal in his films. All they do is pick up tunes from the West," he says. |

A. R Rahman lost a dear friend and sound recordist H Sridhar days after 26/11. It has left the musical maestro shaken but not devastated. Without telling a soul, he left for the US to submit his Hindi song 'Jai Ho' from Slumdog Millionaire at the Oscars.. a song that actually belonged to Subhash Ghai! The song has already been nominated for the 'New York Critics Choice Award', and the soundtrack has fetched Rahman the 'Los Angeles Critics Choice Award' for the best score. The soundtrack has just received a Golden Globe Nomination and the song is a hot favourite at the Oscars.
And to think that the song belonged to Subhash Ghai in Yuvvraaj. It's not just the 'Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai' song that Subhash Ghai allowed the British director Danny Boyle and A. R. Rahman to use in Slumdog Millionaire. It now comes to light that Ghai also gave away an entire original song from his own Yuvvraaj to Slumdog Millionaire. |

New Delhi (IANS): Acclaimed singers like Sonu Nigam, Shaan, KK and even Asha Bhonsle have come out with independent music albums that have been popular with audiences. But these non-film albums are now on the decline and many blame Bollywood for the downward trend.
Some allege that artists and albums are not promoted well, while others say Bollywood music has completely overshadowed independent music.
"Albums are dead. It doesn't make sense to waste nine good songs on a box of plastic when people will only listen to what TV offers them. I think I should do films now," said Rabbi Shergill, whose song "Bulla ki jaana" topped popular charts.
